What cookies do
Cookies are small text files that a website or a third-party service may store in a browser. They can help a site remember a setting, keep a session consistent, measure whether pages are working or support functions provided by an external service. Related technologies can include local storage, pixels, tags and scripts that communicate information when a page loads. The name of a technology does not by itself tell you whether it is essential or optional; the purpose, data collected and parties receiving it all matter. This policy explains the categories that may be relevant to AfriBuzzer and how readers can manage their own browser settings.
Current configuration and transparency
The tools enabled on a website can change as its owner configures hosting, newsletter delivery, analytics, advertising, video embeds or other integrations. We therefore do not claim that every category in this document is active at all times. A visible subscription form, social link or advertising space is not proof that a third-party tracker is operating. The actual cookies and requests depend on the live version of the site and the services connected to it. Where applicable law requires consent before non-essential cookies or similar technologies are used, the site should obtain that choice before activating them. Readers should be able to distinguish necessary operation from optional measurement or marketing.
Strictly necessary technologies
Some technologies may be needed to provide a page requested by the reader, maintain security, balance traffic, prevent abuse or remember a choice about privacy settings. These are often described as strictly necessary because the service cannot reliably operate without them. Examples in general web practice include security tokens, load-balancing mechanisms and a stored preference about a consent selection. Whether a particular technology qualifies depends on what it does in the actual implementation. We aim not to use the label “necessary” merely because a tool is convenient to the publisher.
Preferences and functionality
Preference technologies can remember choices such as display settings, language or other features that make a return visit more convenient. If AfriBuzzer adds these features, a cookie or local storage item may be used to keep the selected option. Disabling these technologies may mean that a preference must be chosen again or that a non-essential convenience does not work as expected. They should not be used to infer more about a reader than is needed to provide the selected feature.
Analytics and performance measurement
Analytics tools, if installed, can help publishers understand which pages are read, whether visitors encounter errors, how long pages take to load and which devices have problems. Depending on the provider and settings, information may include a page address, approximate location derived from an IP address, device and browser characteristics, referral information and interaction events. Some services use cookies; others may rely on different identifiers or aggregated server logs. Analytics should be configured with appropriate privacy controls, retention settings and consent choices where required. AfriBuzzer does not promise that analytics is currently active unless the relevant service has actually been configured.
Advertising and embedded content
If advertising is introduced, an advertising partner may use cookies or similar technologies to measure delivery, limit repeated displays, detect invalid activity or personalise ads where permitted. Third-party video players, social media posts, maps and other embedded content may also contact their own servers when loaded. Those services can receive technical information from your browser and may set their own identifiers. Their practices are governed by their own privacy and cookie notices. Where possible, readers should be offered a meaningful choice before optional third-party content that sets non-essential technologies is loaded, consistent with the requirements that apply to the site.
How to manage cookies
You can usually review, block or delete cookies in your browser’s privacy or site-settings menu. Most browsers let you clear stored data for one site or for all websites, and many allow you to block third-party cookies. The exact controls differ between Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and mobile browsers. If you block every cookie, some preferences or site functions may not work properly. Clearing a cookie does not necessarily remove information already held by a service provider, and blocking cookies does not always block other technologies. Review the privacy settings of any external service you choose to use.
Consent, updates and contact
Where a consent banner or preference tool is provided, you can use it to review optional categories and change your choice. A withdrawal of consent should apply going forward, although it does not make prior lawful processing retroactively unlawful. We may update this policy as technologies or legal requirements change. When revising it, the publication should make the current version available from the site footer. If you have a question about cookies used on a particular page, contact AfriBuzzer through its published contact channel and include the page address and browser type. Do not send passwords or other confidential account details.
